What is your Speaking Tune?Everyone has their own melodic speech pattern. It can be flat and monotone, limited to 3-5 “notes,” or have a broader musical range.
Speaking Rhythm is dependent on whether articulators are voiced or de-voiced. A gentle letter tap acts like the drum section. Leaving off that consonant tap alters the rhythm.
Speaking Speed is defined by the rate of sounds, syllables, or words spoken per minute.
Speaking Tempo varies with the emotional mood, attitude, rhythm, beat, and flow of speech expression.

Movements and Gestures that Work! |
|
|
Most people who speak for fun, profit, work, or civic events are encouraged to move and gesture. Sure, movement activates the voice and helps engage an audience. But, isn’t that instruction a bit vague?
I struggled with this useful yet useless instruction for years. After many years of trial and I error, I developed a Word Emphasis Chart. The speech music symbols include a Dot, Carrot Up, Carrot Down, Wiggle, Stretch, Parenthesis, Dip Down, 3-Part Separation, Hook, Arrow Up, and Arrow Down.
Additionally, I discovered that alternating hand movements - Right Hand, Left Hand, and Both Hands - also creates distinct musicalities that define and separate thoughts and ideas. Give it a try! You should hear three different musical pitches when you gesture right, left, and together. |

Accessing the Orchestra of Speech |
|
|
When we repeatedly gesture the same way with the same hand, we limit speech musicality. Think of it like a small one to three-piece band that keeps repeating the same notes.
By gesturing with both hands and adding the whole body, the 11 Word Emphasis Chart options expand the speaker’s message interest and complexity into a dynamic 11-piece orchestra. Creating that expansive muscle memory variety and precision takes practice. At first try, the words and movements are usually separate and awkward. With practice, the mouth and body unite into a highly skilled speaking tune that highlights key words and de-emphasizes less important “throw away” words or statements. |

Common musical Time Signatures are 4/4, 3/4, and 6/8. The time signature establishes the number of beats, notes, or pauses that are in each measure. These beats per measure create the mathematical framework for music as well as for speech. Let’s drill down on the most common 4/4 time signature.
In 4/4 time, there are four beats per measure. Within that quarter note framework, four words or syllables would be spoken evenly. Example: “Speak With Im-Pact.”
If there are two half notes rather than four quarter notes, the two words would be drawn out for two full beats. Example: “Stop Now.”
A whole note is held out for the full four beats. Example: “Breathe”
If 16th notes are packed into one measure, the tempo would be faster with four notes in each of the four beats. Example: “You can ap-ply this mel-o-dy and tem-po change at an-y time.” |
