There’s more than one way to tell an engaging story. When encouraged to be a storyteller, what style or combination of styles should you choose? Or, if provided a script, how do you take that broad definition of ‘storytelling’, identify the style(s), and refine the approach? Traditional straightforward, linear narrative. Nonlinear narrative where the story jumps around in time. Episodic storytelling with smaller, mini-arc, or standalone segments that contribute to a larger narrative. “Frame” story where the main story encompasses one or more secondary stories. First-person narrative. Third-person omniscient. Stream of conciousness. Dialgue-driven narrative showcasing conversations with other people. Self-reflective or meditative thoughts and insights. Interactive audience participation. Visual using photographs, illustrations, film, and body language to tell the story. Poetic language, rhythm, and metaphor that emphasizes mood, symbolism, and sensory experiences. Allegory, parable, symbolic, or metaphorical tale to convey a moral lesson or deeper meaning. Improvisational, incorporating spontaneous audience reactions and contributions. Epic or mythic larger-than-life tales rooted in cultural myths, legends, or historical events.
